EXTRACT Software

"EXTRACT is a general purpose data display and extraction tool that works with Census Bureau CD-ROMs recorded in dBASE format."

EXTRACT was developed as a way to access and extract data from the 1990 Census Summary Tape File and Equal Employment Opportunity CD-ROMs. The software and appropriate auxiliary files create an interface that allows users to select data items, geographic summary levels and item labels and to view or download the selected items. User-defined variables may be created within EXTRACT by using math functions on selected data items.

EXTRACT may be downloaded from the EXTRACT section of the U.S. Census Bureau web site. Users must also download the auxiliary file(s) for the appropriate CD-ROM being used. Some configuration is required. Help files and EXTRACT prompts will assist in this process.

The State Data Center of North Carolina developed 1990 Census Public Law 94-171 Exercises Using EXTRACT 1.3 and 1990 Census Census Summary Tape File 1A Advanced Exercises Using EXTRACT 1.3. Users are welcome to download these exercises.
